Olympia, Lake Nona take top high school boys tennis honors

A year after losing most of his junior season to a COVID-19 outbreak that shut schools and sports down, Olympia boys tennis standout Alexey Timokhine returned to his winning ways this spring.

The Olympia High Senior wrapped up the third undefeated regular season in his four-year high school tennis career and is the Orlando Sentinel Player of the Year for 2021.

The No. 1 team in the final Sentinel Super Six rankings was a very close call. We went with Lake Nona, which could come back even stronger next season.

Player of the Year

Alexey Timokhine, Olympia, Sr.

Buzz: Titans standout went 23-1 in singles as a senior with the only loss at the FHSAA state tournament to Class 4A runner-up Julen Morgan of Miami Ferguson. Timokhine was 65-2 over four seasons. In doubles, he and partner Luis Leon went 22-2 and were state runners-up.

Sentinel Standouts

Aidan Bart, Lake Highland Prep, 8th grade

Buzz: Move-in from Manhattan was unbeaten in singles until he lost to the No. 1 seed at 2A state tournament.

Luis Leon, Olympia, Sr.

Buzz: Was a perfect 19-0 in singles matches and joined Timokhine as 4A state runners-up in doubles.

Lucas Mach, Sr., West Orange

Buzz: 15-2 with losses to Timokhine, including state tourney match where Mach won first set but retired due to cramping.

Diego Martinez, Lake Nona, Jr.

The buzz: Went 14-3 as district champ at No. 2 and teamed with Timokhine as doubles state runners-up.

Harrison Michalowski, Lake Nona, Jr.

Buzz: District No. 1 champ had a 15-4 singles record, including two state tournament victories.

Pete Tran, Cornerstone Charter, Fr.

Buzz: Ninth grader went 11-1 in singles and didn’t drop a set until losing in a tiebreaker at the state tournament.

Sentinel Super Six team rankings

1. Lake Nona (12-2): Only losses were to 4A state runner-up Vero Beach and Lions beat Vero 5-2 in a district tiebreaker match.

2. Olympia (17-1): Titans only setback was to Vero Beach 4-3 in a region semifinal. Olympia didn’t play Lake Nona.

3. Lake Highland Prep (12-1): Cruised through competition until losing 4-2 to 2A state runner-up Satellite in region final.

4. Trinity Prep (16-2): Class 1A district and region champs lost only to Lake Highland Prep in regular season.

5. Winter Park (11-7): Class 4A state qualifier topped Hagerty 4-2 in region semifinal, Seminole 4-2 in region final.

6. Bishop Moore (16-3): Hornets dual match losses were to Satellite, Lake Highland and Trinity Prep (4-3).
