Education roundup: Canton school gets grant to help close education gap due to COVID-19 closures

Canton Repository - 6/16/2021

The Golden Key Center for Exceptional Children recently received a grant from the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton to provide extended-year education to students of The Golden Key, according to a news release. The Golden Key provides education and intervention to students with autism and developmental disabilities.

The Golden Key developed The Gap Program when its team’s research found its students’ education and functional skills had a greater slide due to the COVID-19 shutdown. This slide was a bigger concern with the unique education learning styles and breaks that occurred during the 2020-2021 academic year. The Gap Program allows each student of The Golden Key to attend a half-day, once-a-week, specialized session for eight weeks either one-on-one or in small groups. The half-day session for each student includes academics, intervention, arts program, life skills and general living skills.

The Gap Program, funded by the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton, began June 7 and will continue through Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon from Monday through Thursday. Golden Key Center for Exceptional Children is a nonprofit, non-public, accredited, charter school.

The new Counselors & Occupational Therapists Professionally Engaged in the Community Program aims to increase the regional behavioral health workforce in high-need populations and high-demand areas through inter-professional education and training between two of Walsh’s master’s level programs, Occupational Therapy and Counseling & Human Development. The four-year grant will enhance both those programs through inter-professional education and training for students, faculty, and clinical supervisors.
