La Casa to commemorate domestic violence victims, honor survivors

LAS CRUCES - La Casa, Inc., a local domestic violence shelter, is commemorating victims in two events Thursday.

The nonprofit recently renovated its memorial garden at the La Casa building, 800 S. Walnut St., with the help of Western Sky Community Care. The garden commemorates victims who have passed away form a domestic violence incident and also has a bench in memory of former Executive Director Gina Orona-Ruiz. The nonprofit will unveil the updated garden in a ceremony at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Also Thursday, La Casa will host its 24th annual candlelight vigil to remember victims and honor survivors of domestic violence. Speakers include city councilors Johana Bencomo and Kasandra Gandara, District Attorney Gerald Byers, Anthony Police Chief Vaness Ordoñez, Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart and domestic violence survivors sharing their stories. The event is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the Plaza de Las Cruces.
