Local organization sponsors student essay contest

The Looking Glass Prairie Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, is sponsoring an American history essay contest. Students in grades fifth-eighth attending a public, private, or parochial school, and those who are home schooled in O'Fallon, Lebanon, Collinsville, and Shiloh all qualify. This contest is conducted without regard to race, religion, gender or national origin.

Students should base their essay on the following: "November 11, 2021, marks the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Imagine that you had a brother who lost his life on the battlefields of France during World War I. You and your family attended the November 11, 1921, dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. Describe what this meant to you and your family. Why is it important to remember those who gave their lives to serve our nation?"

The deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 1. One essay at each grade level will be selected as the chapter winner. Chapter winners will receive a medal and certificate and advance to compete with winners from other district chapters. For more contest details, please contact Nicole at nicoleddrayer@gmail.com.

O'Fallon Moose Lodge makes donation

Night Stalkers on Wheels is the recipient of a check for $550 from the O'Fallon Moose Lodge 2608.

The Moose provide charitable donations from funds raised through their monthly barbecues.

The local Night Stalkers on Wheels raise money throughout the year, helping sponsor families at Thanksgiving and Christmas, providing dinners and other needs.

The non-profit motorcycle riders organization members are U.S. Army veterans who were in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which is headquartered at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. They are nicknamed Night Stalkers and called Task Force Brown. They provided helicopter aviation support, usually conduct missions at night, at high speeds, low altitudes and on short notice.

The O'Fallon Moose members meet at 6:30 p.m. the first, third and fourth Tuesdays at the O'Fallon American Legion hall. They hold monthly barbecues, with a menu of bratwurst, pork steaks, turkey legs and pulled pork sandwiches and sides of coleslaw, potato salad and baked beans.

The Loyal Order of the Moose is a fraternal and service organization founded in 1888, with nearly 800,000 men in about 1,800 lodges in all 50 states, four Canadian provinces, Great Britain and Bermuda.
