Domestic violence awareness rally and march planned for downtown Wilmington

Oct. 3—Domestic Violence Shelter and Services Inc. and Domestic Violence Advocacy Council presents the 31st annual Take Back the Night March and Rally.

The theme is "Take Back the Night." The event strives to unite community members in an effort to raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence, while supporting and empowering survivors of domestic violence.

Participants will march through the streets of downtown Wilmington beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14.

At 7 p.m., please gather back at the Harrelson Center, located at 20 N. Fourth St., for a rally. The theme, "We Are Enough." will feature many examples of how the community is on the right track.

Kim Ratcliff, WECT News Anchor, will serve as mistress of ceremonies. The keynote speaker will be Lisa Brooks. Brooks has worked as a therapist for children victims of abuse and now focuses on self-care, vicarious trauma, and burnout through her work in the Wilmington Thrive Tribe. Entertainment will be provided by Laura McLean and Diamond Haywood.

Refreshments will be provided courtesy of Kohl's Frozen Custard.

"Take Back The Night is a family friendly event and will emphasize the ways the community has a lot to offer when it comes to intervention to prevent violence, supporting domestic violence initiatives, and the empowerment of survivors.

Throughout the month of October, community members are ask to show their talents by committing to engage in one act that can help end domestic violence.
